Dizzy

What a gem! Jazzman Dizzy Gillespie.

Word Warp- Dizzy composed the popular tune “A Night In Tunisia”

In Other Worlds… Walt Disney was a pioneer in cartoon animation while Dizzy Gillespie was an influencial trumpeter around the same time. The signature Mickey Ears flipped upside down become Dizzy’s Cheeks!

Controller Concept (Elementary)

Here is the preliminary concept for Elementary control. As far back as the Super Nintendo, and maybe an old Sega system, there have been controls for navigation, shoulder triggers, and at least four buttons. N64 has enough to have a classic jump command, but this method is worth a try. I think it would be functional because in the Elementary world it may not be as critical to run and jump precisely as, say, Donkey Kong Country. The goal is to make the focus on problem solving, like the puzzles of a Zelda dungeon. This button setup is currently universal on Nintendo, Playstation, and Xbox systems, with buttons to spare.

Douse #1 (Elementary)

When flames stand in one’s way, the solution is to douse them with the scepter’s element of water. Clouds of steam will replace smoke as cascades of water fall around you, making firefighting a walk in the park.

The scepter swirls overhead, making one think of the shape of an umbrella– but it would be more of a reversal– an umbrella made of water puts a stop to dryness, instead of promoting it. This conundrum will not confuse the purpose, which is dousing an obstacle even as the adventurer moves around. A wreath of water will help you stop those flames! Now march, water warrior!

“Art and Soul”

Planning to submit this to the @adobecreativecloud #contest for #adobeartandsoul

I sure enjoyed the movie Soul! The prompt was to create an album cover that reflected myself, so I incorporated my favorite jazz composer (pianist Thelonious Monk) as my part. Since the prompt was for an album cover, I made an effort to tie in the jazz world and Joe’s world in a realistic way.

I have enjoyed seeing all of the different takes on the contest, and I look forward to seeing the winning designs!

Project Elementary

Earth | Fire | Water | Air – The elements are channeled through a scepter to engage physical phenomena. As you advance in a journey through storms, plagues, and more you will experience an adventure. Whether fighting for progress or battling a foe, you will need smarts as well as strength.

Interaction of the elements is intuitive, and this premise relies on interaction between player, elements, and an expanding web of situations. The goal is to remove the enemy from games and replace it with situations that can be overcome, to focus on puzzles with an element of good/evil removed, replaced by strategy, survival, and necessity. These can be presented in a sleek way in the closed realm of digital worlds.

Video games that I take a lesson from are Banjo–Kazooie, Metroid Prime, and Guitar Hero. Project Elementary at its least will compile the structure of a game that I would enjoy playing. -WT

Almost There

Here is an illustration of Van Wert Jazz, imagined in the style of a scene from “The Princess and the Frog”. As the song “Almost There” plays, Tiana sees the potential of her new restaurant.

The image is based on a photo from an early gig for Van Wert Jazz. Today, we have made progress by adding drums, making new arrangements, and even getting professionally recorded. As we pursue our goals, we can continue to say, “We’re almost there.”
